Every last Sunday of the month, we provide a quick read blog post. Something that's to the point and gets you going on your project ASAP.

When it comes to creating a memorable short term rental (STR) stay, it’s not just about location, amenities, or a sparkling clean space. The subtle art of color design plays a pivotal role in shaping your guest’s experience. By strategically selecting and pairing colors, you can evoke emotions, set the tone, and leave a lasting impression that makes your listing stand out. Here’s how to use color to make your STR haven of style and comfort.

Why Color Matters

Colors have the power to influence mood, behavior, and perception. A well-thought-out color palette can:

  • Create Atmosphere: Soft pastels promote relaxation, while vibrant hues inspire energy and creativity.

  • Communicate Style: From minimalist modern to cozy farmhouse, your colors tell a story about your space.

  • Boost Memorability: Guests are more likely to rave about a space that looks unique and cohesive in photos.

Designing Your Palette

Here are practical tips for crafting a color palette that wows your guests:

1. Start with a Theme: Your theme should align with your property’s location and intended vibe. A coastal retreat might lean on breezy blues and sandy neutrals, while a city loft could embrace bold contrasts like black, white, and metallics.

2. The 60-30-10 Rule: Design pros swear by this rule: 60% dominant color, 30% secondary color, and 10% accent color. For example, if your dominant color is a soothing beige (60%), add a secondary sage green (30%) and accents of gold or terracotta (10%). This can be switched up in each room as long as the main color palette stays. For instance, the previous colors were a soothing beige, sage green, and gold or terracotta. In the next room you could do 60% sage green, 30% gold or terracotta, and then 10% beige.

3. Embrace Regional Inspiration: Tap into the local aesthetic. A property in the Southwest might incorporate earthy tones like rust, ochre, and cactus green, while a Scandinavian-inspired chalet can use whites, grays, and soft blues. When in doubt go with nature. If you have beautiful flowers outside your STR during the spring or summer, what color are there? You could bring that in along with whatever color is complimentary to that. Take a good look of the colors outside and try to bring it inside if you can.

Color Psychology in Action

Here are some mood-enhancing color choices to consider:

  • Calm and Relaxing: Blues and greens are ideal for bedrooms and bathrooms, offering tranquility and balance.

  • Warm and Inviting: Shades of soft yellows, oranges, and reds work well in common areas like the living room or dining space.

  • Sophisticated and Modern: Black, charcoal, and white create a sleek, upscale feel—perfect for urban properties.

  • Fun and Energetic: Bright pops of color, like teal or coral, can energize playrooms or outdoor patios.

Practical Application Tips

  • Test Before You Commit: Paint a small patch or use peel-and-stick wallpaper to see how colors look at different times of the day.

  • Think About Lighting: Natural light enhances warm tones, while cooler tones often look better under artificial light.

  • Use Textures and Patterns: A monochromatic palette can be elevated with varied textures and patterns like woven throws, patterned rugs, or textured wallpaper.

  • Accessorize with Color: If painting walls isn’t an option, use colorful pillows, artwork, or rugs to make your space pop.

Stand Out with Photos

Your color choices should photograph beautifully. Use lighting and angles to highlight your palette. Vibrant yet cohesive photos will catch potential guests' eyes while scrolling through listings.

Designing with color isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about creating an emotional connection. By thoughtfully selecting your palette, you’re not just decorating a space—you’re curating an experience that guests will cherish and remember. So, break out the swatches and let your creativity flow—your STR's unforgettable transformation starts now!
